New Mutants actress Anya Taylor-Joy shares her excitement about the film’s upcoming rollout and says director Josh Boone is thrilled about the cut they have. The final Marvel project produced by Fox finally hits theaters after a string of release delays. Amidst reports of production woes, it appears that everyone involved in the project is nothing but eager to show the public the fruits of their labor.
Aside from directing, Boone also co-wrote New Mutants with Knate Lee. The film focuses on five troubled mutants just discovering their extraordinary abilities. Taylor-Joy plays Magik; Maisie Williams joins her as Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Blu Hunt as Mirage, and Henry Zaga as Sunspot. New Mutants had an original release date of Spring 2018, with production taking place from July to September 2017. Still, reshoots reportedly delayed the project, although cast member Alice Braga denies these rumors. Regardless of what exactly happened that kept the film shelved for two years, New Mutants is finally ready to debut this April.
MovieWeb caught up with Taylor-Joy during press rounds for her work in the film Emma. They asked the actress about her thoughts on New Mutants’ impending release. In the clip, posted to YouTube, she says she’s just happy that it’s finally coming out since she had so much fun playing Magik. The actress also adds that Boone is content with the final cut of the movie, emphasizing that “it’s very much his film.” Watch her full answer below:
During Screen Rant’s visit to the New Mutants set, Boone was vocal about the issues he saw with how Fox was handling their Marvel properties. Taylor-Joy’s comments may assure fans that the film will purely be director-driven, but Boone actually had to make some changes to the story after the studio decided it wanted the film set in the present. Like the X-Men movies from the prequel timeline, New Mutants was supposed to be a period piece set in the ’80s. However, Boone shared that after the failure of X-Men: Apocalypse, Fox decided to abandon the past and move all their succeeding films forward in time. Fortunately, since the New Mutants put its lead characters in an isolated place, with little contact to the outside world, Boone didn’t have to make significant alterations. This might also be a factor in Marvel Studios potentially adapting the narrative to the MCU instead of lumping it with the more prominent X-Men franchise, which is up for a reboot.
In a previous interview, Taylor-Joy revealed that she and the rest of the cast have already screened New Mutants’ theatrical cut, and everyone was happy with what they saw. It’s interesting, however, that at this point, there’s a major emphasis on how the film’s supposedly the director’s vision come to life. Over the years, the rise of producer-driven blockbusters has populated Hollywood. Sometimes it works, unfortunately, other times it doesn’t. Hopefully, Taylor-Joy is correct, and Boone’s vision is intact.
