Netflix has released a trailer for its new movie The Last Summer. Not to be confused with the 1997 cult slasher film, I Know What You Did Last Summer, the latest Netflix Original boasts host a host of familiar faces, including respective Riverdale and The Orville stars, K.J. Apa and Halston Sage. Although the streaming service is currently in talks to buy an actual movie theater, it will continue to bolster its catalog with fresh material in the meantime.

The streaming service began life distributing outside properties, but has since branched out into original productions. In the last few years alone, Netflix has produced such hit series as Stranger Things and, more recently, The Umbrella Academy. Expanding further, Netflix also began producing feature films, including the Oscar-winning Roma and the hugely popular YA adaptation, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before - which has a sequel currently in development. The Last Summer was first announced in January 2019. Principal photography was initially due to begin late April, but was ultimately pushed back to May. Netflix purchased the worldwide rights this past June.

Unveiled by Netflix, the new teen film has both a new trailer and a poster. Conveying the bright, colorful nature of the movie, as well as the fresh-faced nature of the cast, The Last Summer will feature no hook-handed psychopaths lurking in the shadows. Instead, as revealed by the trailer, the film will center on a group of recent high school graduates as they navigate their way through their final summer before taking off for college. As the youths wrestle with love lost and found, form friendships in unexpected circumstances, and take greater control in their relationships with parents, they ultimately decide who they will be and what they will do as they stand on the precipice of adulthood. Take a look, below.

The romantic comedy-drama will also feature Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf) and Maia Mitchell (The Fosters) as the respective romantic entanglements of the main characters. Jacob Latimore rounds out the central quartet. Directed by William Bindley, who also co-wrote the film with Scott Bindley, The Last Summer will also star Sosie Bacon, Wolfgang Novogratz, Gabrielle Anwar, Ed Quinn, Jacob McCarthy, Mario Revolori, Gage Golightly, and Norman Johnson, Jr.

The Last Summer is a far cry from the current series on which Apa and Sage currently star. The Orville is, of course, a satirical take on the ever popular (and expanding) Star Trek franchise. Riverdale, meanwhile, became a cult phenomenon for subverting and twisting the usual teen tropes into something slightly edgier. Though both have seen a decline in ratings and popularity over recent months, neither are without a passionate fanbase. As such, the name recognition attached to the film will no doubt draw in viewers. Despite surprising audiences with such films as Mercy Black - a Blumhouse-produced horror film - and their aforementioned Oscar success, Netflix has both helped to revitalize the romantic comedy genre and contributed to an air of nostalgia in entertainment. Though the streaming service intends to expand and branch out in 2019, it’s clear with this new film that they will continue in those endeavors.
