How to identify if a Netflix account is hacked?
A Netflix account can be hacked by people and after that be sold for a smaller price. That was the case in our situation.
What to look for at first?
If you’re thinking that maybe somebody is using your beloved account, the one that you have used for some years now, the one that is having all of your movies and series history there and it is even reflecting your personality at this time, do not panic yet. The first thing to check is the watching history, for example, if you see that some shows are now appearing “watched” even if you, or the people who you are sharing the account with, didn’t see them, you should try to figure out what is happening. Also, look for the names on the “Who’s watching?” page to be how you set them (ask the other people on the account if they changed them).
What to do next?
In my case, they changed the passwords, but other times they just want to watch from behind and try not to bother you so you won’t find out. If you still have the password, the e-mail, or the login info, that does not mean that you are the only one who is enjoying your account. You should check your info on the “Account” page, also check the viewing activity (Account→ Viewing Activity→ Recent Device Streaming Activity) for something that looks out of the ordinary, but keep in mind that some of the persons you are sharing your profile with can use VPN-s to watch certain shows that aren’t available in the region you are.
Your account it’s hacked, how can you fix it?
You should go to Account→Settings and select Sign Out for all devices. Before you do anything else, you should make sure that you are the only one who is on the account, so signing out everyone is the first thing that you will do.
Change your password, if you still can, of course. Go to Account→Change password (browser version) or Account→ Settings→ Change password for Android devices. If you have an IOS device you should use the browser version to change the password. After you change it, you should inform all of your “account-sharing” people and let them know the new password.
You should also check if you have the two-factor authentication on, otherwise, you should activate it.
- Ask for help from Netflix
If you don’t have access to your account because they changed your password and also your e-mail, you should try to contact Netflix for help.
If they changed the e-mail but some of the persons you are sharing your account with are still logged in, they should report the issue from Help.
But if no one has access to the profile, you should go to Netflix Help Center and select “My email was changed without my permission”.
On the Netflix Help Center page, you should see the option for a chat with a customer support employee or even call the support team. You should keep in mind that you HAVE to verify your identity before.
If you can’t get back your account you should consider deleting it.
If you just panicked and the account is safe for now, you should think about doing everything you can to keep it “hacking free”.
Important security measures to stay “hacked free”
So, we all probably share our account with somebody, it is very normal, but we can still talk with them and set some rules. One of the most important rules should be to know who has the password and not to share it without the permission of everyone “involved”.
Another rule should be: not using Netflix on unsafe wi-fi networks. That can make it easier for hackers to access the account.
Another thing to consider is the activation of two-factor authentication if it is not turned on yet.
How can hackers get into a Netflix account?
There are a lot of ways for a hacker to get into your Netflix account, however, the most common is by impersonating a company, for example, Netflix. They will send you an e-mail in which they are asking for some important account data and they will find a motive for making that request.
Another way is by receiving an infected e-mail for example, or a malware can be on a site/suspicious ad and after you click it that malware can steal all of your information that you had saved in your browser.
