The NBC iOS app received an update today that brings a refreshed design alongside new features including split view mode on iPads, new content, and Chromecast support. On top of support for sending content to Chromecast-connected TVs and split view mode for multitasking while watching video on supported iPads, the app gets a redesigned user interface. You’ll also find support for watching video in both portrait and landscape orientations, a new “10 second rewind” feature, and new options for sharing episodes across social networks....

A new app called AirSynth by Dave Wood takes a fun approach to the Face ID TrueDepth camera system available in the iPhone X series phones. Users simply wave their hands above the phone screen to control the synthesizer, like a pseudo-theremin. It’s a fun little demo of the kind of data a developer can get from the TrueDepth infrared cameras. Theremin apps already exist in the App Store, of course, but they use the 2D camera to guess at how close a user is holding their hands to the display....

New Girl features a group of three guys and the young woman who infiltrates their group when she moves into their loft in Downtown Los Angeles after seeing their ad on Craigslist looking for a new roommate. Throughout the entirety of the series, most of their scenes take place in their loft – also known as Apartment 4D. All of the little details and intricacies that went into designing the set of the loft are things that could easily be missed....

Rebooting the iconic web-slinging superhero with a high school-aged Parker going through coming-of-age experiences, Spider-Man: Homecoming also features Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark acting as something of a mentor for the titular hero. One of Stark’s newest creations is expected to be a brand-new suit for Parker to don as Spider-Man that will come with plenty of upgrades....

A company called BillJCo, aka LBX Technologies, is essentially trying to claim ownership over the concept of short-range communication between devices using Bluetooth … As with many such cases, the case is being brought by a so-called Patent Assertion Entity, aka patent troll: a company that purchases patents with the specific intention of filing infringement claims rather than making anything....

After creating a film and over twenty entries in the Need for Speed series, many would think the franchise would have everything their fans want figured out. Before I became an adult, I rarely worried much about the weather. Now, I somewhat obsess over what’s happening and what will happen. As first noted by MacRumors, Apple TV customers will be pleased to know that the $99 “hockey puck” will soon fully support Netflix’s newly announced user profiles. While Netflix says that a complete rollout to all supported devices will be complete by the end of August, it appears that the feature is partially available today for certain Apple TV and Netflix users. Netflix’s user profiles allow subscribers to create personal viewing accounts that track individual ratings, recently viewed movies/showes, and recommendations....

Yesterday, we explained to you what Android Beam is and how you can use it to easily share content between Android devices. However, the biggest limitation of the feature is that it only works for limited file types and content and the transfer process is actually done over Bluetooth instead of Wi-Fi Direct. This means that transferring large videos will take a painstakingly long time. Samsung’s own implementation of Android Beam — S-Beam — allows for sharing nearly any kind of files over Wi-Fi Direct using NFC but it only works across Galaxy devices....

Neill Blomkamp has a number of canceled and unmade movies, so why didn’t they happen? Blomkamp started off his directing career with District 9, which was a huge hit with critics and audiences alike, marking him out as the new bright young talent to watch, and generating a lot of buzz over what his next film would be. Unfortunately, things haven’t quite worked out as hoped for Blomkamp after District 9, with subsequent releases bringing increased budgets but otherwise diminishing returns: Elysium received average to positive reviews, and grossed $286 million against a budget of $115m, while Chappie received more mixed-to-negative reviews, grossing $102 million with a budget of $49m....

Now, Netflix is enhancing its offline option with the ability for users to watch TV shows and movies before they’ve completely finished downloading. Starting today, Netflix users on Android can watch the content they’re actively downloading before that download has completely finished. The pitch behind this feature is that it allows users to start the content they planned to watch if a download didn’t finish because of a poor connection....

Netflix’s The Witcher season 2 casts Killing Eve’s Kim Bodnia as Vesemir in the upcoming episodes. The Witcher, launched in December 2019, is a fantasy drama show based on the series of novels and short stories by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, as well as the popular video game adaptations from CD Projekt Red. Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill stars as Geralt of Rivia, the titular “witcher,” a monster hunter for hire with supernatural powers....

One of the biggest things to come at Tuesday’s Apple event is the opening of Steve Jobs Theater, our first look at the brand new underground auditorium. After almost two years, T-Mobile and Sprint’s $26 billion merger is now officially a done deal. The result is the “New T-Mobile” that has big aspirations for moving the US wireless market forward. Detailed in a press release today, as the deal has closed, T-Mobile CEO John Legere has stepped down and former COO Mike Sievert has taken the role of CEO of the New T-Mobile. That was an expected move but not quite this fast as the original plan was for the transition to happen in May....

And they are also two of the most troubling. The first tells the story of former football star Aaron Hernandez, who was charged with murder and eventually committed suicide while in prison. The latter, meanwhile, looks at how clever Internet sleuths tried to hunt down killer Luka Magnotta who posted several videos online of him harming animals before brutally killing a young student....
